Cow Hollow School Preschool Expansion

TEF Design as Architects

This transformation of an historic building near the Main Post in the Presidio of San Francisco into a modern preschool supports the school’s significant growth and transition to an expanded all-day program for youngsters ages two to five years. Built by the Army in the 1960s, the original structure was most recently occupied by the San Francisco Unified School District and in need of repair and refresh. Its design supports the school’s Reggio-Emilia, project-based philosophy and focus on learning through play, featuring ample daylight and biophilic and nature-forward finishes and furnishings.

TEF reimagined the entry experience, lobby, offices, hallways and communal spaces. Classrooms — each with direct access to the outdoors, and named for local birds found in the Presidio — were enhanced. The project also features a spacious, indoor multipurpose “piazza”, referred to as The Meadow, which provides a central gathering and community-building space for student activities, parent education, and teacher training sessions. The revamped facilities offer a vibrant and functional environment that fosters collaboration, creativity, and holistic learning experiences for the growing Cow Hollow School community.
