I wanted to evoke the coastal beaches and sunny days of California through the design of this home, incorporating more of a feeling than a visual. Material inspirations came from natural treasures found along the shoreline such a sea glass, shells and driftwood. I also opted for sandy tone colors and rougher textures. Jute and rattan echo beach vines and grasses that grow along sand dunes in Montauk.
The biggest design challenge was creating a luxurious interior while keeping in mind that everything needed to be sturdy, stain-resistant and performance suitable for three kids and a family with a busy lifestyle. Luxurious yet livable for this family of 5 was essential in the selection of fabrics and furnishings. The outcome was an interior that is laid-back and upscale. The project spanned over a period of 11 months. The work took place in phases as the owners were living in the home throughout the remodel.
The materials of this home are organic and textural. They represent a crossover between the California Cool and Hamptons aesthetic, with performance linens, velvet, heavy woven and twill. The styles are brought together through wood, rattan and wicker, drawn from the California beach and desert. The mixed metals of antique bronze and brass were incorporated for contrast and visual interest. Marbles, sea glass, corals and fossilized shells reflect sophistication and are nods to natural, oceanic landscapes.
